A Blogging Coffee Topic via FaceBook.

I asked this question on my FB post yesterday:-

"What really is a Master Roaster? Who can claim that they are one and what do they have to do or have done to call themselves one? I got this question today while visiting my Key Account. I thought i post this here to get your pennies worth. Perhaps I will ask co-colleagues too in Toby Australia. FYI, I have been roasting too since 2007 and NO, I am NOT a Master, yet.... :)"

The conversation gets interesting with varied opinions from friends in the industry. My intention was to re-blog this but then thought again that i might missed some elements of emotions. The best way, and the easiest to was to copy and paste.

Enjoy!

  • James Tan Maybe you need a beard...
  • Lynz Ian Becoz u are a humble person mie....eventhough u have all the knowledge and skills u prefer to lay low....there no nd to be a master as long u knw what u doing and how long its takes for you to go this far...tats why my hubby Andy Neymar look up to you...
  • Sean Edwards Not too many real masters out there a few masters of bull shit!
  • Alan Wee Any certification body etc out there? If not then depends on market circumstances and the thickness of your skin I guess
Having said that, there are freaks out there that can figure out the tasting notes quite accurately from the smell of roast!
  • Sean Edwards This is a big reason why we have created a real competition for coffee roasters who can compete and learn from there peers believe me Singapore and Asia will follow this model - come and check this years Golden Bean in October the invitation is open. Cheers Sean

  • Suhaimie Sukiman Sean Edwards- so angry! Has the dark room in US customs caused this angst?  yeah I agree with the Golden Bean. Win that and then call yourself Master.
  • Sean Edwards Not angry Suhaimie Sukiman just sick of wankers and imposters you guys have a great model stick to the passion of coffee and people will follow - check our cafe culture online flip book you guys got your faces I'm there cheers bed time then early start to Boston
  • Ahmad Hidayat So angst.. It's a free world out there dude. People are naming themselves whatever they want. It's just a title. But does it justify the quality of work they input in is a question....
  • Terence Tay Dayat's right, and sometimes it's also a marketing angle as well to have a master roaster.
  • Suhaimie Sukiman Agreed with free world and agrees much with the marketing angle part too! So now, if quality of work is questionable, does the title then be misleading? I guess that's where Alan Wee argument on certification comes to place. Title and position has to commensurate with experience and expertise, to separate the real from the pretenders.
  • Suhaimie Sukiman To all of you that participated in this chat, don't mind if I use this as a reference for me to blog. At the end of the day, I am still blogging.

  • Alan Wee It's a hard game.some certification is hard to get, but some people that go for it might be driven more by marketing demands rather than actual needs. Eg. Q-graders that never go to origin countries, nor even come near the green buying process.

Sorry if I step on people's toes here, no offence intended

But having a barista champ in-house doesn't hurt either hahaha

  • Terence Tay I think we'll have to hire a Supreme Roaster soon
  • Suhaimie Sukiman Terence Tay you can keep yours as Pilot Roaster or High flying Roaster. No one can come close.
  • Ahmad Hidayat Terence Tay you should be concentrating on your amazing holiday not Facebook! Hahahaha..
  • Thomas Robert Hespe A master roaster will not claim this title themselves. Others (whose opinions are valued and respected within the field) will bestow this title on them tax a firm of respect for their hard work and persistence. As with baristas.....or anything really....once one understands it fully ones knows one can never "master" it, simply continue to learn and pass on ones findings. Life is too short to worry about what others think........

  • Toby Smith Why put master roaster rather than just roasters. I did a few days roasting course in France many years ago before there were any courses in roasting to be found. Unlike today. The certification was To become a master roaster. the definition was how to master the roasting of a raw coffee bean without defecting it. Ie scalding...The act of being the master much like a school master who tries to get the best potential out of its pupils. The mastering of something never ends and we were told that to be a master was a responsibility to not to kill the coffee but to nurture it. Still a bloody life long pursuit to whoever roasts. Forever Mastering is forever learning. If anyone wants to judge. Well you are only as good as your last roast. Keep roasting Suhaime!

  • Madi Gras It's also the same with any position bro. Who gives someone the right to be hired as a Manager/Supervisor or Barista, even Consultant when all you got is experience?

Then what if you have a Dip. or a Degree but no relevant experience, are you qualified

  • Alan Wee Give yourself whatever title you like, at the end of the day, your s*`t still smells the same

I don't let myself get too caught up in titles. If I own a 1 man show company I can call my self CEO, COO, POO also can. Don't mean I should get more resp

  • Madi Gras I don't understand how a sentence with "your s**t still smells the same..." can end with a smiley?

Like I said what's in a name? Don't have to be angsty about it. Cos in the end all these are meant mostly for the customers and very little to the team,if a healthy team environment is cultivated.

The only position/title that really matters to me is being a very good, positive Father.
